Did you know that your national identity card (NIC) contains personal information such as your date of birth? In Sri Lanka, NICs include details about your eligibility to vote, gender, and date of birth.
Old NIC numbers consist of 9 numbers and 1 letter, while the new NIC number has 12 digits. For example, in an old NIC number like 790029871V, the first two numbers represent the year of birth (79), and the next three numbers (002) represent the month and date of birth, as well as the gender (if the number is less than 500, it belongs to a man, and if it is more than 500, it belongs to a woman). Finally, the letter V indicates the voter's eligibility status.
If it is X, the NIC holder is not allowed to cast a ballot.

The new NIC number differs somewhat. Ex: 197900209871. Here, the first four numbers represent the birth year, while the next three digits (002) represent the birth month, date, and gender.

The following NIC converter can easily complete the task. Enter the national ID card number in the box above, then click Find. For instance, you can get the answer (date of birth) as January 2 1979 if you type 790029871V or 197900209871.
